Dawsonville Cub Scouts Race into Fun!

Cub Mobile Derby

On Sunday, November 18th, three Dawsonville Cub Scout Packs joined
forces for the second Dawsonville Cub Mobile race.  The event was held
at the Veteran's Park facility behind the football field.

After the success of last years event we decided to hold the race locally in
Dawsonville again and to forgo the larger district race in Cumming.

This gives the boys an opportunity to meet the other Cub Scouts in town
and build new friendships.

The cub mobile race is an event where each den in a pack makes a wooden car, which is ridden down a designated track.  The time is recorded for each boy and totaled for each den and then divided to determine the team average.  The team with the lowest  time wins fastest car.

The cars were also judged for best in show where the boys show off their creative side by painting and decorating their cars.

There were 56 boys who participated in the event this year from the three packs.  Races were held in each Cub Scout age category.

For the Tigers (1st grade) Best in Show was awarded to pack 133 and Fastest
car was awarded to Pack 233.

For the Wolves (2nd grade), Best in Show was awarded to pack 412 and Fastest car was awarded to Pack 233.

For Bears (3rd grade); Best in show was awarded to pack 233 and Fastest car
to pack 133.

For the Webelos (4th and 5th grade); Best in Show was awarded to Pack 233 and Fastest car to Pack 412.

Cub Scout Packs 133,  233 and 412 would like to thank:  Venturing Crew 109, Boy Scout Troop 109, Dawsonville Park and Recreation, Byrd's Storage, Tower Automotive,  Big T Tires , Home Depot, and Wal-Mart for helping to support this event.

We Sailed to Victory!

Rain Gutter Regatta

Cub Scout Pack 412 sailed into a new year with their annual Rain Gutter Regatta held August 26th.

The Rain Gutter Regatta is a race where each sailor (scout) had to construct and decorate a balsa wood boat.  The seas are 10-foot lengths of rain gutter filled with water and the ships a mere 6 inches long.  Each boy was able to captain their own sail boat powered by their own hot air!

Two scouts at a time race their boats
using wind created by their own lung power. During the race, the boats may not be touched except to upright a turned over boat.

It sounds simple, but it is a very exciting event as the boys are actively involved in propelling their boats.

Every scout received a cool patch for participating in this years rain gutter regatta.

Prior to the race each boy voted on their favorite for "Best in Show".  This years Best in Show were: 1st place Colin T., 2nd place Nicholas B., and 3rd place Michael F.

Racing was fierce competition but the winners of the fastest boats were:  1st place Logan W., 2nd place Tristan I., and 3rd place Jake S.

We are proud of the boys for "doing their best"!

Dawsonville’s First Tri-Pack Cub Mobile Race

Cub Mobile Race

On Sunday, November 19th, the three Dawsonville Cub Scout Packs joined forces for the first Dawsonville Cub Mobile race.  The event was held at the Park and Recreation facility behind the football field.

There were 64 boys who participated in this event from the three packs.

Races were held in each Cub Scout age category Tigers (1st grade), Wolves (2nd grade), Bears (3rd grade) and Webelos (4th and 5th grade).  For the Tigers Best in Show and Fastest car was awarded to Pack 412.  For the Wolves, Best in Show was awarded to pack 233 and Fastest car was awarded to Pack 133.  For Bears; Best in show was awarded to pack 133 and Fastest car to pack 233.  For the Webelos; Best in Show was awarded to Pack 233 and Fastest car to Pack 412.

Dawsonville opted to forgo participating in the district event held annually in Cumming this year as it was scheduled on Veteran’s Day and we felt it was more important for the boys to participate in the parade and show their respect and appreciation for all of our veteran’s.

We look forward to holding the event again next year as the boys and parents really enjoyed having it locally.

The Cub Scout packs would like to thank the following organizations for their assistance:  Venturing Crew 109 (Dawsonville’s co-ed scouting program for young men and women age 14-21) for providing concessions, running the races, and distributing the awards, to Dawsonville Park and Recreation for allowing us to hold the event at their facility, to War Hill Tire and Auto for loaning us 150 tires to set-up the course, and to Daryl Hovden Construction for providing logistical support.

"Silver War" at Robinson Elementary School

Silver War

Cub Scout Pack 412 joined forces with the students at Robinson Elementary School in a Silver War.  What, you may ask, is a Silver War?  It is a competition between classes to see which class can collect the most money.  Each teacher was provided a container to collect coins and the class collecting the most coins was awarded a pizza party.  The funds were collected for The Ric Rack, Dawsonville’s local food pantry.  We were absolutely amazed by the amount of support received for this community service project.  All together we collected $489.96!!!

A check for the amount of $460.00 was presented to Jerry Tragessor from The Ric Rack at the November pack meeting.

The remaining funds paid for the pizza party.  Ms. Welch’s awesome third grade class collected the most money and was the winner of the pizza party, which they received on December 13th.  Pack 412 would like to thank Dr. Biggs, principle of RES and all the faculty and students for their amazing efforts in support of this project.

Pack 412 Blasts into Fun with

Annual Space Derby

Space Derby

Many men who once were Cub Scouts fondly recall their derby experiences: planning the design of their vehicle, working with a parent to build it, and seeing it perform on race day when, win or lose, they could take pride in having done their best.

In this way, the three basic lessons learned by participating in a Cub Scout derby—the craft skills, the rules of fair play, and good sportsmanship—are remembered for a lifetime.

So, on Saturday, January 27th, Cub Scout Pack 412 was making great memories with the boys who participated in the annual Space Derby at First Baptist Church of Dawsonville.

The boys and their parents worked together to make miniature model rockets driven by propellers powered by rubber bands along a suspended, heavy monofilament line.

Though this event is not a popular as the annual Pinewood Derby the boys have a great time creating their space crafts and getting together to race them.

We are very proud of all 20 boys who participated in this event.  They all did a fantastic job and we look forward to working with them on other fun events.
